So you’ve got yourself a new computer and now it’s time to go through the process of installing the software/application that you need.
There is a lot of software available over the web, including the open source freeware and many others. But some software/application are worth to use while some are just added to make your task easy. So, which computer software is more important to be installed on a new PC?
Guys, I have created the list of top 10 software to be installed on your computer which doesn’t cost you a fortune whether you have a desktop or laptop computer. I will let you know these software/programs and I’d recommend you to use those while setting up your new PC. Let’s get started:
One of the most important software on your computer is your internet browser. For example, when you get Windows 10, the stock browser is Edge and on Apple, you get Safari.
Both of these are very good but if you want the best browser for your PC, Google Chromes stands at the top. It has a large assortment of extensions, cross-platform support and cross-device syncing.
In the second best position, Mozilla Firefox makes in the list. It has most of the same features as Google Chrome and it has been improved quite a bit over the last year and comes as a great alternative to Chrome.
Other popular alternatives to consider include Opera and few privacy-focused are Duck Duck Go and Brave browsers.
A must-have software for any computer is an OfficeSuite like Microsoft Office.
But if you need a completely free OfficeSuite, LibreOffice is hard to beat. It’s opensource and includes alternatives to Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access. LibreOffice has also improved over the years with their compatibility with Microsoft Office.
If you want even better compatibility, there is WPS Office free version but unfortunately, it’s ad-supported instead of downloading software to your computer.
The other OfficeSuite software which you could opt for the free online version of Microsoft Office and the Google Docs, Sheets and Slides. These are really good too to play the media files stored locally on your PC.
Another necessary software for any computer is Media Player. The best one in the list is VLC Media Player.
It can easily play any audio or video files which you will try and even those weird formats you’ve never heard of. All in all, VLC gets the job done most of the time without any hassles and other media players to consider are KM Player and Pot Player.
If you have the photo that needs to be retouched and you want to create a new image. There are several free softwares that are similar to Adobe Photoshop.
The best to choose is GIMP and it leads the pack as the best image editor. It has most of the features similar to Photoshop including a ton of photo enhancement tools and the ability to work with layers.
If for some reason GIMP doesn’t float, your Paint.net is another solid alternative and it quite popular as well.
if you’re a PC gamer, one of the first software/programs you should install is Steam. It contains most of the games you would ever play on your computer. They’re known for having awesome sales and it’s super easy to use to keep your games library organized.
Certain games and franchises not found on Steam can be found on competing services including Ubisoft’s. You can play Origin by ElectronicArts and GOG Galaxy and more.
It is always a good idea to PC Cleaner tool for removing unneeded files from your system. It helps to keep your drives in good health. My personal favorite is Bleach Bit. It’s open source, lightweight, and simple to use. Apparently, it’s very popular with former presidential candidates.
Another PC cleaner I like using is Glary Utilities and there’s the ever-popular C Cleaner which suffered a massive malware attack by hackers late last year and with more recent issues I’d recommend not using this software.
Torrents have a bad reputation due to illegal file sharing. But they do have many legitimate uses including sharing free software and being able to download files that you already own.
Bit Torrent is the free client that I use. It’s open source, fast and reliable. It comes with a search engine and media player built-in. If you’ve used other torrent clients, you’ll also like this because it’s ad free.
If you’re in the need for security software, BitDefender antivirus free edition does a great job of protecting your pc from viruses and malware as an added layer of security.
Malwarebytes free version is another option to keep around as a good backup for those times you need to run an additional scan. It will initially offer a 14-day free trial of the premium version and when the trial ends, it reverts back to the free edition.
Others to consider include Avast, Sophos Home, and Windows Defender which offers decent protection for the average user.
If you’re prone to risky behavior online or you’re running an unsupported operating system like Windows XP, you might be better served by getting a premium security Software/program.
For the fellow coders and developers, one of my favorite text editors is Sublime text. It offers a lot more features than the built-in Notepad program for Windows.
Notepad Plus Plus is also a good option and has been around for a while. Another text editor which are worth checking out is Visual Studio and Brackets.
For many people are using a cloud service to back up their data and it is a must-have nowadays.
Dropbox offers two gigabytes of space for free but it’s not a lot but might be useful for your most important files. If you combine that with other cloud services that storage can add up.
Google offers a generous 15 gigabytes of free storage and it is synced between GoogleDrive, Gmail and Google Photos.
There’s also Microsoft’s OneDrive offering up to 5 gigabytes and iCloud for Apple users gets you another 5 gigabytes of storage.
These are the basic software which are required to be installed on a new PC. What are your thoughts on the same? If you guys know few more essential software which are required for management and fluent working of any computer system. Please, comment down below.
Have a happy system 😉
